Ciao tutti, Looking for driving suggestions from Florence to Rome. Any great roadways to take? Any fun places to stop and stay? Recommendations of places to eat, sights to see on the way? Staying only two days in Rome. Any fun places to see?
There is way too much to see in Rome in two days. Which is not to say you can't spend two very happy days there. I'd make Ancient Rome a priority since both Rome and Florance are great from Renaissance artwork, but Florance has relatively little in the way of ruins. If you are at all interested in the early Roman Empire/Republic you can make a fantastic day out of the Colosseum, the Roman Forum, and the Palatine Hill--you can get a combined ticket to all three saving both money and lines. The Capitoline Museums are well worth the stop too--both Roman and Etruscan things there. They are all close to the Colosseum Metro Station. Another possible day would be the combining St. Peters with a tour of the Vatican Museum stopping in for the Sistine Chapel of course. For extras try to visit the Pantheon, the Spanish Steps and the Trivi Fountain. Less well known, but one of our favorites is San Clemente. This little church has layers of previous churches and temples underneath in a maze of tunnels. It's in the Lateran district. There are other interesting early Christian relics and churches there.
How long do you have to make the drive? If you have a couple of days, then you could take the ss222 south through Chianti, stopping in the Chianti towns, then Siena. Then connect up with the autostrada and visit Chiusi and Orvieto. If you only have two days (or do you have two nights, and one full day plus partial days) in Rome, then I would take the train directly from Florence to Rome and spend any extra time IN Rome.
Julianna, As you're planing to drive, be sure you're aware of the usual "caveats" regarding driving in Italy. If you need further information, post another note. Happy travels!
Most scenic route is Rt 2- the old roman road- spot hill towns & explore- you wont be disappointed- always ask for una camera con vista- a room with a view- they will love to provide it! Pienza a personal fav- and always Orvieto- & pasta w/ truffles- the real deal- not truffle oil! trust your instincts!
Don't let the car look touristy & check parking regulations- fines are hefty & they will nail you thru car rental! ask when you rent the car how to do the parking thing- mostly free on sundays- domenica gratis!
