Fruits and Vegetables in Season Currently in Germany

We are heading to southern Germany next week and wonder what fruit and veg is currently at its peak.

Apples, plums, pears, peaches, apricots, blueberries, water and other melons, tomatoes, green beans, carrots, cucumbers, cauliflowers, cabbages and more. Remember, there will be lots of imports from warmer and cooler climates in addition to the homegrown fruits and veggies.

Thanks for the reply. We're more interested in locally grown produce that's currently being harvested and we might find used in the local restaurants while we're there. We've been to Germany before and love the quality of the food.

Lots of regular summer veg like cucumbers, tomatoes, various lettuces. Gorgious nectarines, peaches and plums, along with a popular variety of plum called zwetschgen. All kinds of Mushrooms are filling the stands, including my favorite - Pfifferlinge, or what might be called chanterelle in the UK or America. The root veg are also out in full force, new potatoes, carrots, and of course all the cabbage veg. Germany has had an abundance of rain this summer, so the produce markets are overflowing.

The only thing missing is GOOD SWEET CORN!!!

You know, Dave, I've been trying to picture a typical restaurant meal - except for asparagus in season or red cabbage in the winter - I can really only think of lots of fresh salads with tomatoes and cucumbers and lettuce. The usual accompaniment to a meat course would be some kind of potatoes or pasta (Spaetzle); maybe green beans or carrots? Jo or James would have the answer to that....Of course, home cooking would be different. I bet the markets are overflowing with produce and flowers.

Every good German restaurant has seasonal dishes. Right now menu items with Pfifferlingen are big. They will be in salads, with pasta and cream sauce, in risotto, in sauce over schnitzel. Stein pilze too. You may find them stuffed in ravioli, or oyster mushrooms with rucola salad. Sautéed Wirsing, or leeks, or a veg. mix is good. Fresh mint teas, or dishes made with lots of fresh basil are also popular.

Fruit will appear in the desserts. Strawberry season brings lots of strawberry desserts. Right now you get the plum cakes - "zwetschgen kuchen", apple everything including fresh squeezed apple juice, and fresh pear juice will be at many markets.
