My family is doing the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage in Apr/May 2012; then exploring Portugal. I know that a bus is the best way to get from Santiago to Porto, but the schedule doesn't work for us (we want to see the Botafumeria used in Mass at the Cathedral on Sun. 5/20). I'm trying to do a train from Santiago-Vigo, and then another train from Vigo-Porto, Portugal. The second train, altho I think it exists, hides in a website that I can't get to translate to English...anybody know anything about these trains? Many thanks - J
Use a translator like - http://babelfish.yahoo.com/ Please provide the link if still puzzled and most especially to help in future.
Thank you, Neil...I'll try that. J
Good choice making sure to see the botafumerio. I was there on a day they had it out (by complete accident) and it was really cool!! I'm not sure how tight your schedule is (or the ages your family members are), but it looks like there is a bus that leaves Santiago at 10pm that night and arrives in Porto at 1am for 30Euro (alsa.es). If you can find a train from a nearby city(like Vigo) to Porto, there are lots of local smaller bus lines that could get you from Santiago to there to catch your train. There are lots of tourist offices in Santiago that can help you if you can't figure it out online ahead of time. There is a train from Vigo to Porto that leaves at 7:37pm and arrives at 8:45pm. The website is here: http://www.cp.pt/cp/displayPage.do?vgnextoid=678439a3f64de110VgnVCM1000007b01a8c0RCRD A schedule for this train with stops and details is here: http://www.cp.pt/StaticFiles/CP/Imagens/PDF/Passageiros/horarios/internacional/porto_valenca_vigo.pdf If you don't want to look for a local bus between Santiago and Vigo, and would prefer a train, it looks like one leaves every 1-2 hours.
