Hi, I was wondering from Murren, how do we get to the airport. How far is it from the closest international airport? This way we can plan our itinerary. Thanks again.

The airports in Switzerland include Zurich (zrh), Geneva (gva), Bern (brn), Basel (bsl or mlh) and Lugano (lug).

The Basel airport is unique because it sits at the intersection of Switzerland, France & Germany.

we are planning on an open Jaw travel-fly in from London and departing from Switzerland ( specifically, Zurich as I learned it is the closest).
We will do Paris from london via Eurostar then the TGV to Muerren ? I wonder how long is the approximate travel time from paris to Muerren?
I will buy the rail pass. I am still trying to figure out what to buy for 3 adults , one 13 years old for 4 days. we will do schiltorn, Jungfrau, gondola, funicular plus the train ride to Zurich.
Thanks so much

Your 13 year old does not need a pass to travel in Switzerland. When you purchase your Swiss Pass while in the USA just request the free Swiss Family Card which allows kids <16 free travel all over Switzerland their paying parent. If you don't get the free Swiss Card here in the USA before you leave then you can purchase the Junior Card when you get to Switzerland for about 20chf which does the same thing as the Swiss Family Card...free travel.

Also, the TGV does not go to Mürren.

If I understand correctly, the connection from Paris to Murren is at least 6 hours? Is it changing trains a few times? Thanks

Sally, one neat thing about the Swiss rail site, you can click on the number at the left of each itinerary and it will show all the changes. I would search Paris to Lauterbrunnen since you will take a cable car from across the street (visible from the train station) up the mountain to a rail station for a short ride to Muerren. It looks like only two or three changes are required from Paris to Lauterbrunnen. You can also see what platforms each train leaves from and where they arrive. This way, you know how many platforms you must traverse to get to the next train. The stations will have ramps down from each platform and up to the next. You should have little problem making a train change in 5 minutes.

Thanks for all the detail feedbacks.I am still deciding whether to stay one night in Lucern on our way to Zurich airport to catch flight back home.Part of me wants to as I am not sure when I'll be back to see switzerland again but then I am just thinking it might be a hassle to book a one night hotel in Lucern

No, I definitely would NOT leave from Mürren and go directly to Zurich airport for my flight home. That would definitely be stressful for me. If 3 days is what you have in Mürren then by all means spend 3 days and enjoy that beautiful scenery. I think spending the night in Lucerne before a morning flight out of Zurich is a good idea. Lucerne is beautiful, too.

Why would it be more of a hassle to book 1 night in Lucerne rather than 1 night in Zurich?

Tim, I was upon the impression that we can just leave from Murren straight to zurich airport but you are right, it'll be too stressful as we need to be there 3 hours prior to our departing time. If this the case, then is 3 days in murren enough then one day in lucern?
In murren, we plan to see the jungfrau, schiltorn, have breakfast at Piz Gloria, see the trummelbach falls and do some light hiking.I am not sure if I am brave enough to try the first flyer that Chris mentioned. Thanks

Luzern is only an hour by train from Zurich, with multiple departures. Luzern has lots to see; we spent the last day of our trip there last summer, coning from Gimmelwald. We had an early morning departure from Zurich but made it easily due to the train going right to the airport. Check to see if your train goes all the way to the airport--it will save time and a transfer.

FWIW, we ended our last trip in May in Murren and went to the airport from there. Our flight was out of Zurich and not until 5:40pm so we didn't feel as much stress about getting there too early. We went from Murren to Interlaken Ost and then onto Zurich Airport via Bern (the change in Bern was just under 10 minutes and easy). We left Murren around 10:30am to Interlaken Ost, had 30 minutes and we grabbed lunch from the market across the street and ended up at the airport by 2:15 with plenty of time.

Thanks for all the informative feedbacks. I am certainly getting so excited for our trip. I have decided to spend a night in Lucern before the trip home.Afterall,I am already there. Now, I am
rethinking our 12 days itinerary of London -paris and switzerland (Murren-Lucern).Maybe, I should cut paris and then divide time between London and switzerland. Though, I would love to see the Eiffel tower.

I is a little rushed to do London --Paris--Switzerland in 12 days, but on the other hand if you wish to travel by train Paris is right on the way, and it makes sense to stop over for a couple of nights, expecially is you want to see the Eiffel Tower.

Yes, It will be kind of rush but can't pass up the chance to see Eiffel tower again and take the cruise.
