From Munich to Rothenburg in December

I was thinking of going for a day trip to the X-mas markets however the Romantic Road Bus stops in late October. Can anyone suggest how to get there and back for a day (last time I did a bus trip out of Frankfurt)? Either public transport or tour bus is ok option. Thanks Barb

You should be more specific about which town's Christmas markets you wish to visit. Almost every town has a Christmas market. Fortunately, almost every town has a Bahnhof. As long as you stay in Bavaria, you can take regional trains between towns all day long for €21 with a Bayern-Ticket Single. Get schedules from the German Rail website. If you just want to go to Rothenburg, there is an RE that leaves Munich Hbf at 9:34 (on the current schedule), has two changes (Treuchtlingen and Steinach) and gets to Rothenburg at 12:59. On a weekend day, you could leave at 8:29 and get to Rothenburg at 11:49, but the Bayern-Ticket isn't valid on workdays until 9. However if you also buy an €8,80 ticket to Pfaffenhofen on the 8:29 train, it leaves Pfaffenhofen after 9, so you could use the Bayern-Ticket after that.

I guess when I said I want to go from Munich to Rothenburg in the heading stated the only route I wanted as I know every town has many X-mas markets. I am looking for the best way to get to Rothenburg from Munich in the beginning of December. And I really don't want to take a train and make 3 connections, so I was looking for any other option including tour bus to get there without connections.
