Anyone traveled from the airport to the Atocha Train Station? How many changes? How many stairs? I understand there may be a new station somewhere along the way. Thanks
It has been a couple of years but it is not easy on the metro. I think it involves two changes. The airport is line 8, and train station is on line 1 but I think there is a connecting line inbetween the two. And all subways have lots of stairs. The bus might be easier. I would check with the TI to see if a bus goes directly to the train station. That is always a possibility. An easier alternative might be taking the bus the the Plaza de Colon (bus station) and then a cab to the train or perhaps the metro from there.
Here's a link to i-Metro which gives you routing for various cities. Frank's correct--it looks a little complicated but it's do-able!

Frank is correct....three lines, two changes. The change at the Nuevos Ministerios line isn't bad, but there are stairs at Tribunal. The journey in all will probably take close to an hour and a half. A quicker way is to take the metro to Nuevos Ministerios, then transfer to a Cercanias train (local commuter train) that will take you to Atocha station. When you come out of the Cercanias section at Atocha, follow the crowds thru the underground mall to your left, and you'll come to the RENFE intercity lines. You go up the escalators to the second floor to get to the boarding gates. Journey time from the airport to Atocha will be 30-40 minutes.
