We are a couple in our early 60's. First time in Switzerland. Just purchased Swiss passes. Have 1 day to venture out from Luzern. Any suggestions for direction to take for a one day excursion? Specific stops???
Hello. My husband and I are both in our 60's also. We were in Switzerland back in 1970 and will be returning there in June. In 1970 we visited numerous countries using a Eurail Pass. As far as Switzerland, we absolutely adored Lucerne and Zurich. We visited Geneva, but weren't as impressed. We are buying a Swiss Saver Pass, for four days total. This time we are going to venture out from Lucerne and visit Berne, as it has been recommended to us. Otherwise just enjoy Lucerne. We are also going to re-visit Mount Pilatus and visit the Jungfrau. We are also going to take the Bernina Express (Lugano towards Zurich) and the William Tell train (from Zurich to Lugano). Switzerland is beyond beautiful and clean. Enjoy. Elaine Mission Viejo, Ca.
For your day trip from Luzern, consider these choices:Mountain lift to Mount PilatusMountain lift to Mount RigiA boat trip to the far end of the lake (can take 6 hours). Fortress FürigenThese suggestions are designed to avoid a common mistake in planning day trips, which is trying to go too far, involving too much round trip travel time, which means you get to see the inside of trains.Rick Steves gives detailed instructions on how to do each of these day trips, in the Luzern chapter of his book Switzerland.
