From France ot Switzerland

We are trying to get from Beaune to Murren to Fussen via public transport. I have been on all the sites but it seems a it hectic? 5 or 6 tranfers w/ literally minutes between them. What am I missing? Is it as tough as it looks? Thx, Steve

The general answer is something like this.

You get off the train, you walk across the platform (or under it--down and up a flight of stairs), you get on the train. It could be tough if you have mobility issues, or are dragging a steamer trunk, otherwise, no.

I am confused by your itinerary, though--Beaune to Fussen via Murren? I hope you are describing two different trips!

You are connecting small towns to an international rail line to other small towns, so many changes are normal.

You also have the opportunity for some drive-by tourism, e.g. spend an hour in Berne and catch a later train.

Have a great time!

Hi Steve, just returned from three weeks in Switzerland, Austria, and Prague. To give you some confidence, our leg from Lauterbrunnen to Salzburg required 4 changes of train with layovers ranging from 4 minutes to 12 minutes. All went very smoothly. All stations had ramps for luggage making it easy to get from platform to platform. Switzerland trains seem to run to schedule. Only used a couple of trains in France and one in Germany on past trips and they were all on time. However, Austria is a horse of another color.

Steve,

The trip you mentioned is not really too difficult.

There appears to be a train departing Beaune (Chagny) at 09:05, arriving Interlaken Ost at 13:57 (time 4H:52M, 2 changes in Dijon and Bern, reservations compulsory). The time between changes is 14M and 28M. From Interlaken Ost, board the small Berner Oberland train to Lauterbrunnen, transfer to the Post Bus (bright yellow, you can't miss it) to Stechelberg, take the Cable Car to Gimmelwald and then Murren. You can buy a ticket at Interlaken Ost that includes all modes of transport.

The trip to Fussen is a bit more involved. Buy a ticket at Murren to get back to Interlaken Ost via the same route. There's a train departing Interlaken Ost at 07:01, arriving Fussen at 14:42 (time 7H:41M, 4 changes in Bern, Zurich, Buchloe & Kaufbeuren, reservations compulsory). Time between changes is 10M, 18M, 29M & 15M.

Note that these schedules may change slightly at the time you'll be travelling.

Happy travels!
