I will have one and a half day drive from Berlin to Frankfurt. If I would like to sleep in a small town, where should I stay?
I will leave Berlin at noon and arrive in Frankfurt at around 6pm. Thank you.
Edward, have you looked at a map of Germany and chosen a route? It seems there are at least a couple of ways you could go. The E30 or the more southern route of E51. If you're going at this time of year, it gets dark early - do you plan to drive in the dark? I would go the E30 and get off just before Braunschweig, taking route 39 SW and go as far as Salzgitter (not a really small town) or stop just south of Braunschweig and spend the night at the Arcadia Hotel in South Braunschweig, which is not far off route 39. I think the small towns in the area don't have very many hotels. However, Wolfenbuettel has several; it is a small town. You'd have to take the 395 off route 39... it wouldn't be much of a detour, and the next morning you could cut west back to route 39, eventually get on route 7 and then go via Goettingen, Kassel and Fulda (where you have to leave route 7 and turn SW) to Frankfurt. Judging from the map, that looks like the most direct route. This is a website in Engl. for Wolfenbuettel: http://www.webtourist.net/germany/wolfenbuettel/tourist-information.phtm P.S. I've visited the area several times and speak fluent German. Wolfenbuettel would be my choice. I wouldn't risk too much of a detour (Goslar came to mind) because you never know if you're going to have a problem on the Autobahn. Check for hotels on www.hotel.de and/or check them out on Tripadvisor.com. or just google hotels in town of your choice.
Hi Anna, thanks for your advice. Will take a look at the map and the website to see your suggestion. I try not to drive at night. You have also reminded me about German... I studied German more than 10 years ago but have not had any chances to use it. Jetzt, alles vergesson. (It is only one I can say now...)
