French Villages in July

I am going to be spending some time in France in July. I am hoping to explore some regions. I know this is tourist high season but I would like to do some hiking, wine tasting, exploring etc...I was thinking of Languedoc or Provence, Dordogne, Burgundy and Normandy.
I am travelling solo but if anyone would like a travel partner for some village exploration let me know.

I am also curious about renting a place in a village. I heard RS mention that some families rent rooms, homes out in the summer. I think this would be a great way to experience the culture.

I have been reading RS's book but have not had much time to really plan.

Does anyone know about renting places in France?
What about car rental?
If anyone wants a travel partner let me know.

Read RS book more and take your own time to do some planning. Opinions expressed on this web site are valid for the individual making the opinion and may not work for you. I have read about places to avoid only to find them quite attractive. I am taking RS tour of Paris and South of France on May 16th and the schedule for that tour (found elsewhere on this web site)
may be helpful for you. Happy travels.

Bear in mind that the vast majority of tourists follow the same trails. If you reserve a car you should have plenty of options off the beaten path.
