French Toll Roads versus Alternatives

We intend to make a drive from the French Riviera up to the Normandy Battle Fields area. It is clear that the quickest way to do this is on the AutoRoutes.

Can anyone who has made this drive offer some practical advice where good time can be made on non toll roads.

Conversely are there any points where it is highly advised to be on the autoroute network because the other roads will take a long time.

Thanks!

What month are you doing this?

Your average speed on roads depends partly on what month you're doing this, which you didn't mention--summer months, weekends in the summer--these make a difference in the answer to your question.

This highlights the importance of having some aptitude for map reading.

Your GPS system will not care if it plows you straight into a temporary road closure due to a march of the striking beret dusters union.

I'm going to bring along Michelin driving directions for "Suggested" & "Sightseeing" routes.

Where it looks like saving money in tolls is worth the extra time, we'll probably be on the back roads. If the traffic is awful, we will USE THE MAP, and wend our way back to the Auto-topia.

But if anyone does know of a national, French highway system website (in English, of course) that posts updates on current constructions projects and expected driving delays,... let us know right here!!
