We will be in Barcelona in late Feb/early March, one week in Barcelona for business, then a few days to overnight on a side trip. We definitely want to get to Figueres, but were maybe considering continuing up the coast into France, or may stay in the area. Would anyone have suggestions for the area within 3 to 4 hours by train from Figueres to spend a night or two? Interests would be an older, interesting town with good food, maybe a major site or two.

Perpignan and Carcassonne spring to mind, the first is better in my opinion. Sete is really neat, but not sure how the train would work - - maye into Montpellier and backtrack. Quite honestly, I don't know how trains work at all, I just know where neat places are.

Perpignan is close to Figueres and can be reached by train. A new TGV (high speed) train between the cities is ready to begin, but I haven't seen a date. South of Perpignan is Collioure which is on the local route between F-P. It's one of the most picturesque coastal towns in France and worth a visit.
