Does anyone know which websites are reputable? There are loads of self-catering/gites sites, so we'd like some recommendations for the best, most reliable ones.

I have also rented from individuals. In France, they must provide a contract that I feel offers me some protections. I have never had any problems in 10 stays at different places.

If you're looking for accomodation in big cities there are some self-catering hotel chains (known as "appart-hotels") that are very reputable. The one I've stayed at several branches of is Citadines (www.citadines.com) and I've also heard good things from friends about Appart'City (www.appartcity.com).
