French Riviera in October

My wife and I shall be joined by our son and his wife at Nice on 8/10. We plan staying in the Riviera area till 12th or 13th Oct.Our idea is to hire a car and grab the scenic places, culture, and generally avoid the beaches and glitz.

Suggestions requested for:

1.good value for money places to stay.

2.places to visit

3.specific things to do

4.some memorable eating places

5.local art and crafts purchase

cheers,

Ravi

I would recommend visiting Cassis, a charming town with a great Friday market about a half hour east of Marseilles. My sister and I spent a full day and overnight there in mid-October of 09 and hiked to some of the calanques. The calanques (means 'inlets' in the Corsican language) are beautiful and wonderful for swimming. If hiking isn't your thing there are boat tours that leave from the harbor to see the calanques. We were there the 9th and 10th of October and the weather was wonderful. If I had it to do over I would stay longer to do more hiking.
