French Countryside

We would like to visit the Loire Valley and Burgundy. Should we fly to Paris and take trains or fly directly to the other regions? If the latter, what airport would be near Amboise or Beaune?

The airport in Burgundy is based in Dijon but there are no flights to/from Paris since the TGV takes you there in 1h40min only. Then it takes 20 min from Dijon to Beaune by train. Don't miss Dijon as it is really worth a visit! I like this video from the TO http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w5CojSGoJ4k
Bon voyage!

Dear Coco, Thank you for your valuable advice. We will keep Dijon in mind as one of our destinations. How far away is the Loire Valley from the Burgundy region by car? By train? Thanks again, Margaret

My pleasure Margaret! Amboise is 400km from Dijon, about 4 hours by car and not very handy by train since you have to go through Paris and take 3 trains. You'll find all the info on google maps (itinerary) and train info on tgv-europe website. Bon voyage!!

The closest airport to Amboise is Tours (TUF), but I don't think any airline flies from Paris to Tours. The drive from Paris to Amboise is 2 - 2 1/2 hours. A worthwhile stop along the way is Chartres, to see the magnificent cathedral. Train will take you about the same amount of time.

driving is very fun in the country side. the country road is narrow but not much traffic, and people don't drive as fast. the high way is as good as in US, a few paid but not expensive. you can stop by any village you want, esp. to catch the markets where you can buy home made food or wine. the castles in loire are also better discovered with a car..

There are some great sights along the way if you drive from Amboise to Beaune. You might even consider breaking your trip for a night, for instance in Vezeley or one of the small towns in the Serien valley.

I love the French countryside, drove over 3000k of it last summer. Sunflowers, vineyards , twisty turny roads, market day in small towns. This is the real France , frendly people, great sites, good food, no crowds.

In late September 2010, we drove from Dijon to Amboise in an day, stopping at several sights. The drive was beautiful and we saw stopped for lunch at Venezlay which is described in the RS guide for France. Time passed very quickly and it was a pleasant drive.

All of these places ring a bell. If only I could remember where I'd been.
