We will be in the French Alps in middle/late May and are undecided whether or not to drive from Chamonix through the Mount Blanc tunnel down to Turin, Italy. Seems like it might be time consumptive and also quite expensive. Have been thinking about the possibility of taking the train instead - spending the day in Turin and coming back in the evening. Does anyone have thoughts on the matter?
We have our own car - just wanted to spend a day in Turin as we are so close. Didn't know, especially time-wise, if a train might be a better option. Think by the time you pay the tolls/gas that the train might be better all around - especially have to drive in Turin. Most trains deposit you downtown.
Unfortunately, train connections from southeastern France to Italy are very poor. From Chamonix, trips involve multiple changes and take most of the day. Bus connections are also impossible. Driving is probably your best bet...a two hour ride.
If you're determined to go to Turin, you might consider parking your car at the airport (Caselle Sandro Pertini Airport) then taking the bus into the city. The airport is just north of Turin...you come into the very north fringe of Turin on the autostrada from Chamonix, then backtrack north a few miles to the airport.
Good thinking, Norm, thanks for the help.
I've driven in the reverse direction and it's an easy drive. Be prepared for the expensive toll thru the tunnel (http://www.atmb.net/atmb/en/tunnel/27/the-mont-blanc-tunnel/tolls.html )
and for the traffic in Turin- some of the worst I've experienced.
