Is it too late in the season to enjoy hiking in the French Alps in late Sept? I see the Helbronner gondola across the glacier stops September 20th. Is Chamonix the best village to spend a few days?

The hike will be weather dependant, so it is hard to say if the last week of September will be good. I was there last year September 28-30 and it was great hiking weather. I also visited September 2003 (fantastic hiking weather) and September 2001 (early snowfall closed many trails). I do like staying in Chamonix. Twice we have moved over to Chamonix because the weather was better there than other places in the alps.
