Freising, Erding or Landshut

My wife and I had a wonderful time in Munich last year so we are planning another trip in September 2009. This time we want to rent a car at the airport and drive. We will arrive in Munich at 12:00 (after a long flight), and do not want to drive very far for the first night. We have researched the towns of Freising, Erding and Landshut and they all seem to be within an hour from the airport, but can’t find a lot of information on the “ambience” of each town. Can someone give us advise on which town would be the best based on the following:
1. Easiest drive from airport.
2. Old town square, architecture? We will have time to walk around, have dinner etc., but not go on any tours.
3. How about a nice hotel that could accommodate a car? We do not have to stay in the town center, but it would have to be within walking distance.

4. Which town would you like to stay in and why?

Once we get this leg of the trip nailed down, we will be traveling north and will post again for more advice. Thanks in advance.

"May I ask why you selected Freising to begin with and did you travel beyond this area following your stay? We are thinking of driving from here to Regensburg for a night and then on to Rothenburg."

We were ending our trip. We were in Regensburg and Rothenburg before going to Freising, both really enjoyable places. Regensburg has become one of my favorites in Germany.

We learned of Freising from a message on one of the boards. We checked out its website. We like to visit some places that are not full of tourists. Freising seemed like a good bet and it was.

We have stayed in Freising twice at the Hotel zur Gred.

We arrived by train but the hotel had limited parking. The Hotel zur Gred is more of an old fashion Gasthof with a decent restaurant. It does not have an elevator. It is only 3-4 blocks from the town square. If your trip coincides with Oktoberfest, zur Gred and other hotels in Freising may already be booked.

Freising has a nice old town square, the oldest active brewery in the world and an interesting monastery just above the town on a hill (Domberg). The current Pope was ordained at the Domberg. Perhaps most of all I like that Freising is criss-crossed with small streams from merging rivers, making for very pleasant walks.

We also liked a meal that we had at the Hotel Bayerischer Hof in the town center.

Gary,

Thank you very much, it sounds like a delightful place.

We also stayed in Freising and Hotel zur Gred. It was very convenient, only a quick bus ride from town to the airport. You may just want to drop your car and bus into town (15 min?). It is a quaint little village and we enjoyed our one night stay. Hotel zur Gred was ok. Older hotel, smelled like they had smoked in it, yet our room was clean and nice, and good breakfast. Honestly, I'm not sure if I would stay there again because I reserved a bed with private bath, then when we arrived he said the private baths were taken. I reserved and reconfirmed our reservation twice and still didn't get the private bath. The bath was way down the hall. Other than that though, I was pleasantly surprised after my initial fear of cigarette smoke and just being an old place. Liked Freising a lot. Chose that location because it was so easy to bus to the airport.
Have a great trip!

I have never stayed in Freising, but I did visit the brewery there once. However, I know a few things about it.

Freising is close to the airport. They quickest way is by bus, although you can use the S-Bahn through Neufahrn.

You can take regional trains or the S-Bahn into Munich using MVV single-trip and day tickets.

It is also on the main line headed north out of Munich to Regensburg or Prague.

The nice thing about staying in Freising is that you can avoid the expense and hassle of a car.
