I'm thinking about a 3-4 day trip around this area in a few weeks. I'm guessing that Freiburg and the Schwarzwald would be my base. I was wondering if it's easy to hike just a little on your own and get around the Schwarzwald area by public transportation. I also want to see Basel, but am on the line about Colmar, especially since I believe Freiburg also runs along the lines of cute medieval town. Also, any tips for these cities or any surrounding towns that might be of interest? Thanks!
Can't speak to Freiburg or Basel, but Colmar is a lovely little town and very American-friendly since WWII liberation. I'd love to go back.
On our first trip to Europe we spent our first night in Freiburg. We were meeting up with the rest of our family for a few days in the Black Forest. There was nothing about Freiburg that looked cute or medieval to me. It was a mid-sized college town. We had a car, but I have always heard that public transportation is somewhat lacking in that area, especially to use it as a base to go to other towns. You might want to consider renting a car. We stayed at a farm house in Sankt Peter and did day trips to Basel (went to a museum my aunt wanted to see) and Colmar. Can't really comment on Basel, but Colmar was a cute medieval town. I would have liked to spend more time there.
Hi, Elena. I disagree with the poster that appeared not to enjoy Freiburg. I have been several times, and enjoy it very much. My photos from there can be found at: picturetrail.com/bepineurope if you are interested in seeing Freiburg from my perspective. Tschüss.
