We will be travelling by car from Salzburg (2) night, to Fussen (2) night and then to Freiburg (2) nights. We would like recommendations for accommodations (pensions or budget hotels) for the Freiburg area. We would prefer Freiburg and slightly north if possible as we are travelling to Frankfurt from there and then home next morning. Please advise re accommodations in Freiburg.
Would Baden Baden be an option? We stayed at the Hotel am Markt a nice budget hotel recommended in Rick's book (www.hotel-am-markt-baden.de). It was a nice small German town to hang out in for a couple of days.
We enjoyed the Friedrichsbad Spa and the restaurants there were very good as well.
Thanks for the information. As we are driving from Fussen ( around 4 hours ) we thought we would not like to drive too far for that day. But may consider if your plans change.
Ed, if you are looking for budget accommodations in the Black Forest rather than just in Freiburg, you should not have much problem.. Look at this website under Accommodations, Schwarzwald.
"Bavaria Ben's" website has lots of suggestions that are well suited to traveling by car.
Even w/o recommendations you will spot "Zimmer Frei" signs which mean a rooms available.
We used to visit the village of Glottertal, just NE of Freiburg. Their website has a wealth of hotels, pensions and rooms in private homes. Just look under "Unterkünfte" near the top. There are many small towns in the area that would be the same.

North of Freiburg in the town of Elzach: Haus Steiert, a very nice private B&B with rates of around 16-17 Euros each per night. My very roomy room had a balcony and private bath, very clean and comfortable, with an amazingly ample breakfast.

The town of Gengenbach is a lovely old medieval town. Ben's Black Forest page (mentioned above) has some places there:
We stayed at this pace in Freiburg: Hotel Alleehaus. It cost 150 Euros/night for 4 people. Here is the web site: www.hotel-alleehaus.de It was one of the best places we stayed at last summer while traveling in Germany.
Hi Ed,
The above is the only hotel in Freiburg (Breisgau) we have ever used. We enjoyed it a lot and agree with the reviews in the above web site.
Gute Reise! ... P
Thanks for all the replies. The information will be very helpful.
I've stayed at Hotel Gasthaus Schuetzen a couple times. It has very reasonable rates (about 60€ for a double), clean rooms, and a good restaurant. It's easy to find - located on the south side of Route 31 (the road you'll probably take through the Black Forest) shortly after you enter the city limits. You can catch a trolly car across the street to get to the city center. Freiburg is a great city to stay in. Lots of good restaurants, historic sights, and night life (big college student population).
