Free Day in Lauterbrunnen

I'm overwhelmed with choices of things to do in the Lauterbrunnen valley! There's too much great-looking stuff to do and we'll only have one free day. What is your favorite way to spend a day in this area?

If the weather is cooperating, take the first train to the top of Jungfrau. After the you're done at the top and you arrive back down at Kleine Scheidegg, hike to the Mannlicen cable car station and ride down to Wengen. From Wnegen either hike or take the train to Lauterbrunnen. From Lauterbrunnen take the Postal Bus to Trummelbach Falls, explore the falls, and hike back to Lauterbrunnen.

We were there this summer for 5 days and did not see/hike everything. You can spend alot euros and time in transport up to Jungfrau so I suggest you take gondola up to Murren. Eat reasonable/vg lunch on the outside patio at Hotel Edelweiss for the incredible views of valley and if clear Jungfrau. Walk around lovely pedestrain only Murren then short hike down trail to Gimmelwald for a slice of swiss life of the past. Then have beverage at small hotel/restaurant bef you take tram back to Lauterbrunnen valley. If it is raining take bus to Trummentahal Falls on the valley floor.Lucky you, even for one day.you will return!

In my opinion, I would visit Murren and Wengen. I was not that impressed with the falls. You will be taking your chances on the weather being nice by going up to the Schilthorn.

Whatever you do you will enjoy the Lauterbrunen. We spent 6 days there and loved every minute. I would love to go back and spend a couple of weeks there as a home base.

I want to "second" Michael's suggestions. Along with that I would suggest going to Gimmelwald as JS advises. That is where you will see a traditional Swiss farming alpine village and not a tourist village.

Another option would be to take the bus to Stechelberg and the cable car to Gimmelwald. Walk around there a little, the take the cable car on up to Shilthorn's Piz Gloria. A James Bond film was filmed there, and it offers spectacular views of the whole region. Having said that, going to Jungfraujoch would still be my first choice.

Enjoy! You'll see why Lauterbrunnen calls its valley the most beautiful in the world.

Hi Bill, I would take the cable car to Gimmelwald!Trust me on this. The view on this is overwelming!!! I live near Yosemite and it pales to the view in Gimmelwald. From there you can take a short hike to Murren and have a great lunch. Hope this helps! All the best, Monte

It's probably too late for this yr; but if you're ever there in the summer, look for the various 'dorf fests' (village festivals) in the area. We saw one in Murren in '07, where everyone dresses in folk costumes & the cows are arrayed in elaborate flower headdresses, parading through town with (among others) a 'bell band' of men ringing the huge cowbells. Even more authentic was one in tiny Grutschalp (at the top of the gondola above Lauterbrunnen)...with sausages, raclette, more costumes, & dancers & an alphorn performance overlooking the beautiful valley.

Plan A (Weather nice) Take the cable car up to the Stilthorn, admire the view, go down to the Birg station and then hike down to Murren for lunch. Then hike around Murren area the rest of the day. The Jungfrau trip is too expensive and takes too long.

Plan B (Crappy Weather)Go to Lauterbrunnen to walk around then hike to see Trumbleback Falls. The Falls isn't as weather dependent as going higher up.

Hi Bill,

Jungfrau is good only if it's a clear day.
Take the cable car from Lauterbrunnen to Muerren and hike down to Gimmelwald.. like what one reviewer said, the alpine views and experience is awesome.. away from tourist trap. If you are interested, you can visit my blog http://mytwocutebabies.blogspot.com/2009/06/switzerland-trip-part-3-lauterbrunnen.html(look for the Switzerland posts). We was in Switzerland for 18 days out of which 7 days were in Lauterbrunnen/Grindelwald). Hope it convinces you!

Cheers,
Clare
