Free day in bavaria

I have a free day in bavaria with nothing planned. The only thing I have to do is drive from Fussen to Berchtesgaden. What kinds of things are there between fussen and berchtesgaden (besides oberammagau). Thanks, C

We went to Mittenwald and walked around the town. It's a lovely, small village. However, it was mostly filled with tourist stores. You could stop and see Ludwig's second castle, Herrenchiemsee, a replica of the palace at Versailles, in France, which is sited on the Herren Island in the middle of the Chiemsee Lake. It was meant to outdo its predecessor in scale and opulence, although only the central section was ever built. I believe it's right off of the autobahn towards Salzburg. This would be a nice stop half way into your trip.

To get to Herrenchiemsee, you go to the town of Prein and take a boat to the Castle. It was just lovely. It takes about 10 or so minutes on the boat. I felt it was well worth the visit and you could see the lovely mountains in the background.
I spent a good 3 hrs at the Castle

Hi Chris, I'd also suggest "Mad" King Ludwig's Neues Schloss, more commonly known as Herrenchiemsee. Fabulous inside. It's an hour from Berchtesgaden (we saw it as a day trip from there). You can check it out here: http://www.herrenchiemsee.de/englisch/n_palace/index.htm Click on "Palace tour" to see the rooms. Click on "Panoramic shots" to see a few rooms entirely by using your mouse to scroll/scan the rooms. If you're not visiting Linderhof from Fuessen, I'd suggest that also. http://www.schlosslinderhof.de/englisch/palace/history.htm Bad Toelz and the Benediktbeuern are worthwhile stops also. http://www.benediktbeuern.de/en/the-monastery/ Paul

unlimited speed limit. I like driving fast :-D No, a couple of very short stretches. Even where it is, southeast of Munich towards Chiemsee, it is a very busy road. You'll be lucky to stay at 130 let alone faster. Before you try to get your jollies on the autobahn read the archives here about all the problems with doing that.

Thanks for all the great advice. Another question, are there stretches of road between fussen and Berchtesgaden that have an unlimited speed limit. I like driving fast :-D C

Would definitely recommend Ludwig's other castles. Since you're in Fussen, you must have an interest in the guy. Linderhof has great paths around the castle grounds and Herrenchiemsee was excellent (just make a note of which boat you're boarding, as there are two that arrive on the island, and they don't go to the same place). I hit herrenchiemsee on my way to Salzburg, so it's right on your way. The palace at Linderhof was probably my favorite of Ludwig's castles (and the only one that he completed), so I wouldn't miss that either.
