We are traveling to Frankfurt in April for 2+ weeks and are meeting up with another family. Both families have 2 children, 5 and 8 y/o. Here is an itinerary we are thinking about by rail: Frankfurt to Venice = 10 hours by rail. Break up the trip in Innsbruck 5 hours between each. Innsbruck: 2 nights 4/17-4/19 Venice: 4 nights 4/19-4/22 night train to Vienna Vienna: 3 nights 4/23-4/26 Salzburg 2 nights 4/27-4/29 Munich: 3 nights 4/29-5/2 Any help with places to stay or changes to the itinerary would be great! We are looking for places that are centrally located in each city preferably with an indoor pool for the kids.
In Venice we are planning to stay at Unionlido camp ground and day trip into the city.
Awesome kids hotels can be found at www.kinderhotels.com
Doubtful any of the less expensive city hotels will have a pool (300Euro day). If you want to spend some serious money ($500 per day at a chain hotel) then you'll find pools. Also have to comment on flying in to Frankfurt, then travelling a long time on the train, wouldn't it be worth the cost difference just to fly into Venice? You'll be wasting basically a day and a half on the train by the time you get through customs, etc.
Is there something about Innsbruck which particularly interests you, or are you just trying to break up a long trip the first day? The full fare just to Innsbruck is €231,60 for two adults w/ children. There are less expensive, train specific, non-refundable fares, but I wouldn't try one on the day of arrival. If you just took the train an hour down to Bacharach for the first day, you could then count on being in Bacharach at 7:30 the next morning to take a specific set of trains to Venice. You could get an advance purchase Europa-Spezial fare from Bacharach to Verona (17:01) for as low as €78 per family. You would still have to buy local tickets from Verona to Venice since the Bahn specials don't usually cover routes entirely outside of Germany.
Rail Passes or Point-Point tickets? With Point-Point tickets you can save with 2nd class. At least in Germany, children (under 15) are free on their parent's full fare or discounted (Sparpreis) tickets. Children 4 - 11 must buy a 1/2 price pass. Parents and children from each family can travel from Salzburg to Munich on a Bayern-Ticket for €29, total. Actually, since children under 6 are always free on German Rail, you could put 3 adults and both 8 yo on one Bayern-Ticket and buy a Bayern-Ticket-Single for the other adult. Everyone, Salzburg to Munich, for €50. Are you really planning to arrive in Frankfurt and go to Innsbruck on the same day?
