If you had 3 days for each leg of the above trip, what would you see and do? We will have a campervan and are fairly open as to what we will see and do. We will leave Frankfurt on Monday afternoon and have to be in Rostock Friday morning. On the return trip, we will be in Lubeck around noon on Monday and need to be back in Frankfurt by Friday morning. Any help is appreciated!
Have you considered visiting the island of Ruegen and then returning to Rostock from there by Friday. It's Germany's largest island, very picturesque, with a miniature train connecting several of the towns; beaches, nice restaurants and definitely the place to buy some amber "Bernstein" jewelry. (I regret that I didn't buy a pretty piece....)You can also take a boat ride along the coast and admire the white cliffs. (Remember, it gets cold on the water.) On the way there or back stop in Stralsund. In Luebeck try the marzipan. On the return trip to Frankfurt, I'd by-pass Hamburg and come straight down, perhaps past Braunschweig through the Harz mountains, stopping in Goslar or, farther east, in Wernigerode and from there cut back over to Frankfurt.
Must-see places: Rheinsberg and Lake, the city of Schwerin (and it's 7 lakes) and Lake Müritz, Germany's largest domestic lake. It's all in the Mecklenburg Lake District and absolutely gorgeous!Returning from Lübeck consider staying over in the Harz mountains, e.g. in Goslar. Take the steam train ride up Mt. Brocken for the spectacular view. And then you can stop at Sababurg.de, which is the original sleeping beauty castle. That's the one the Grimm brothers visited and had in mind when writing their fairy tale. Also a stop in Kassel is worthwhile. Visit Wilhelmshöhe, a garden/park on top of a hill overlooking town. And of course, further South, coming closer to Frankfurt, Marburg in the Lahn river valley is another must-see: First university in the world that was not run by the Vatican (i.e. first protestant university in the world) - all medieval and beautiful.
