Frankfurt to Budapest and back...

I am curious about going from Frankfurt to Budapest and back, via Munich, Salzburg, Vienna.. I know about using a local plus a Bayern ticket to get to Munich and a Bayern ticket to get to Salzburg from Munich. What about getting from Salzburg to Vienna via trains without pre booked trains? And then from Vienna to Budapest back to Vienna, etc.. then the way back.. any info would help...

Consider flying one way and training the other to save time/money. I did something similar from Stuttgart with family - flew from Stuttgart to Budapest, then took the train to Vienna, then Salzburg, then through Munich back home.
