Frankfurt/Munich in December (26th/27th)

I am planning for a very short trip (2+1/2 day) between Frankfurt/Munich. Is the weather going to be too cold? any advices? I started getting quotes for hotels in Munich, people who replied back said they will be closed for the winter, is this the case in most of the places? Do I need to make my reservations well in advance? Any suggestions will be helpful

Thanks

I notice you live in California. Yes, it is likely to be quite cold in the areas you mention in late December, especially compared to where you live.

Uma, only very small family run hotels/hostels close for the holidays. Check hrs.de or hotel.de and you'll find plenty of open places. End of December is usually not the coldest part of winter (which is end of January) but expect plenty of grey skies and rain. Temperatures should be in the mid 30s to end 40s... Although last year we didn't have a winter at all with no days of freeze and we haven't really been having a summer neither so far. Global warming is messing up any predictability.

There is one drawback to your dates. We usually go to Germany the day after Christmas, and we find that no stores or sights are open, and a lot of restaurants are also closed. Big hotels are, of course, open. And yes, it is usually cold--but last year there was almost no snow!
