We are flying into Frankfurt and want to stay at a hotel there for one night before we start on our Grand Adventure. The Ramada Messe seems to have good reviews, and it has airport shuttle service. Has anyone stayed there? Any advice on that?

Yes, I think you can do much better. First of all, look at it on a map. Do you see much of anything around it? No, cause it is sort of in the middle of no where, surrounded by the Griesheimer Forest. Look for a hotel in the city itself, take the S-bahn, which runs every 15 min. and only takes 11 min. to get into the city center. What is your budget and when will you be here? If it is during a trade fair prices are high, but if not, then prices are good. Is having a pool important? If not, then prices will be even better. Have a look at the Hamburger Hof, the Pure, Concorde Hotel, Alexander am Zoo, or Adina Apts.
