My family and I have a fifteen hour layover in Frankfurt Germany. I was wondering what things you would recommend for young children as well as adults that is not too expensive and is fun. Also what would you do to get to town from the airport?
The S-Bahn runs from the Regional Bahnhof, underground near Terminal 1, into downtown Frankfurt. The ride takes 11 minutes, and one leaves every 15 minutes. Depending on how adventurous you are, how far from the airport you want to go, you have time to get down to St. Goar or Bacharach, on the middle Rhein (more interesting, IMO, than a city. The ruins of Rheinfels castle, in St. Goar, are interesting for kids to explore.). Take the S-Bahn to Mainz and a regional train from there. For up to five adults, or parents and all of their kids under 15, a "Gruppentageskarte 5 Personen, Preisstufe 6" for €31 will cover round trip to Bacharach. To go to St. Goar, a "Gruppentageskarte 5 Personen, Preisstufe 4" for €14,90, will cover your round trip to Mainz. For Mainz to St Goar, purchase a Rheinland-Pfalz-Ticket, €25 for 2 adults and all children under 15 costless.
That sounds interesting, lee but I'm afraid I will get lost. Is there anything in Frankfurt that is informative and fun and reasonably priced? Thanks
There is tons of stuff to see and do in Frankfurt. If you use the Search function, up in the right hand corner, you will pull up dozens and dozens of posts about Frankfurt. The city is only 11 min. from the airport and very easy to reach. If we knew the age of the children, that would help. Infants, toddlers, kindergartners or pre-teens? Also, when would this be? Winter activities are a lot different than summer ones, obviously.
We will be there on July 18, 2012 with young children ages 6 and 3 and then there are five adults in the group as well. what tabs do you mean?
Glad Jo piped in... because as we all know her love for Frankfurt is evident and it is often overlooked. I took my grandson there last Nov. (15 years old) and we thoroughly enjoyed it, but if I'd had the 3 year old granddaughter I could have seen her loving it just as well. It's Germany... and they have lots of kid friendly places to explore as well as the great food. I think you will be pleasantly surprised how easy it is to navigate...especially if Jo helps you.
With children that age, and your visit on a Wed. I think I would go to the Palmengarten, go up on the Main Tower, and for museums, perhaps visit the Film Museum, the Senckenburg Natural History Musuem, the Experimenta Museum, the Kinder Museum or the Communication Museum. If it is a rainy day, the Lego store in MyZeil is a treat, as they are quite open to letting kids sit there and play. There is a kids play area set up along the river on the Sachsenhausen side, with bouncy things, etc. since summer vacation is on. The Zoo is undergoing some renovations, but might still be fun. If you want a break in sightseeing, perhaps visit a pool, either indoor or outdoor. Which hotel will you be in? The ones in the city are going to be cheaper than out at the airport, plus it makes it easier for sightseeing to be in the city. One of my favorite restaurants is Dauth Schneider in Sachsenhausen, as there is a play ground across the street, where you can take the kids for a bit of playtime. Another might be Paulaner, as the kids can run around the garden area. There are playgrounds though in dozens of parks, spread out everywhere in Frankfurt, as the city is about 45% green.
Thank you Jo! We were not planning to get a motel. Do you know what the cost is for Palmengarten?
The Palmengarten costs 5 euro for adults and 2 euro for kids. http://www.palmengarten.de/#/de_DE/index/index Ralph, they have young children, and so strolling through the applewine pub district in Sachsenhausen is probably not on their agenda of fun things to do with kids. Also, one way tickets from the airport are 4.10, but a group day ticket will only be 14.90, which is a savings.
