Frankfurt Fly in Train out

Will be arriving at FRA then have 4 days in Germany with rental car. Then will be taking train to Basel Switzerland. Rent & return the car from/to the airport saves some $ also avoids having to drive downtown Frankfurt.
Is it reasonable to return car to airport and then get a shuttle/bus/subway/train?? to the downtown train station? I do not know what time I will be returning to Frankfurt could be 1600 could be 2000 so will also need a hotel. I have seen a number of hotel suggestions near main train station on other posts which would make it easier to catch early train the next morning. When I check DB BAHN I find 10 stations under Frankfurt so am a little confused as I would want hotel near train station. I assume Frankfurt(Main)Hbf would be correct station.

Yes, Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof is the station you want, to get your long distance train to Basel. The word "Main" means the name of the river, as the city is known formally as Frankfurt am Main, or Frankfurt on the Main. There is another Frankfurt up north, near Poland and that one is Frankfurt (Oder). There are a lot of reasonably priced hotels near the train station, and the airport is just 11 min. away, so it is much better to stay in the city rather than at the airport. Plus, it gives you a chance to see one of the historic cities of Germany.

Frankfurt(Main)Hbf is the main downtown station. Hbf is the abbreviation for "main station"... "(Main)" refers to the river that Frankfurt lies on and is thus differentiated from Frankfurt(Oder) on the Oder River. Cost for a local train from Frankfurt(Main)Hbf to the airport - Frankfurt(Main)Flughafen - is 4.25€.
