Hello, I am curious about going directly from the frankfurt airport to Munich Hpthof. I know that i would normally go to the Frankfurt Hpthof and then get on a train from there. But is there an easy and cheap way to go directly to munich from there? (the DB specials are about 29 Euroes) but that means i still have to pay to goto downtown frankfurt
There is an ICE that runs about twice an hour from Frankfurt Flughafen to Munich without requiring a train change. The train does make 'stops', but you don't have to make any changes. These are typically 3h 20m to 3h 40m rides (depending on what other trains they accomodate on the way).
Below is an example routing of one of them from www.bahn.de.
Frankfurt(M) Flughafen Fernbf Mo, 15.03.10 dep 08:54.
Fern 5 ICE 513 Intercity-Express.
Mannheim Hbf dep 09:32.
Stuttgart Hbf dep 10:12.
Ulm Hbf dep 11:08.
Augsburg Hbf dep 11:55.
München-Pasing.
München Hbf Mo, 15.03.10 arr 12:33.
I would be a little nervous about planning on using one of the €29 Sparpreis tickets immediately when you arrive in FRA. Those tickets are train specific and non-refundable after the day before use, so if your flight is late, you lose the ticket and have to buy a full fare ticket anyways.
Why are you flying into FRA when you want to go to Munich? Munich has a fine airport.
If you provide sufficient time cushion for a late flight, then you might as well use regional trains. You can get to Munich by regional train via Frankfurt Hbf and Würzburg in about 2½ hrs longer than the fastest ICE for €27 single or €21 pP for two with an RMV local ticket to Kahl and a Bayern-Ticket from there.
I usually advise people to find something to do around Frankfurt (Bacharach, St. Goar) for a day, then use the Sparpreis ticket the next day on a train you can count on making.
"(the DB specials are about 29 Euroes) but that means i still have to pay to goto downtown frankfurt".
Not true. If you schedule local/regional transportation to the origin of the express train specified on the Sparpreis ticket (or from it to a final destination), that travel is included in the fare. This provision is called "Vor- und Nachlauf". And, although the express train(s) on the ticket are specified and can not be substituted, any regional train from that morning at midnight can be used to get to the express train and any regional train getting to the final destination by 10 AM the following morning, can be used. However, the starting station and ending station of the entire travel must be specified on the ticket.
You can also build stopovers into the ticket.
Last year, I went from Cochem to Köln by a specific IC, stopped for two hours in Köln for lunch and to see the cathedral, then continued on by a specified ICE to Hannover. From Hannover I went by regional train to Bad Harzburg. All of that travel was specified on the ticket and included in the €29.
Six days later, I took a regional train from Walkenried to Göttingen where I caught an ICE to Karlsruhe. Again both trains were specified on the ticket and included in the Sparpreis fare.
