Can someone give me an updated estimate on how long it might take my husband and I to get through customs? We arrive on a direct flight from Atlanta about 7:30am. I have to try and figure out about how long it will take us to get through customs, then get our rental car and get on the road to Miltenberg. I was thinking at least 2 hours to get luggage, customs, car and get to the car before we actually leave. Does that sound reasonable?

In '06, my friend arrived about 9:30 and I were out of the airport and in our rental car in about an hour. That was at the beginning of the World Cup. (a pretty busy time). We didn't have any checked luggage. If your car is at the airport, it's only a few minutes to the counters at terminal 1 or 2. Then the car is in the basement parking lot. Very easy access.
It's an efficient airport (it's German!) and quite easy to navigate.
On departure I did have to go through two full security checks. Give yourself a little more time there.

I agree with the one hour rule of thumb. That's how it usually works. Only if your plane parks at a very remote tarmac position and they need to bus you to the terminal it can take longer until baggage arrives. But both DL and LH from Atlanta dock right to the terminals - usually. But then waiting in the line for car rentals, finding your car (that only goes for T1 where the car rental providers share an entire 6 stories car park) may take up to another hours. So your two hours sound like a very good guess to me. If not do procrestinate your start of the drive until at least 9.30 to 10 o'clock for traffic reasons!
