We need only one night in Frankfurt prior to our departure back home. Any suggestions? I have still not checked with all of Rick Steves' listings but thought I would get some other input. Thank you!
Hi Ann: In addition to Rick's listings in his book Germany & Austria, you can go to viamichelin.com, select the Tourism & Hotels tab, input Frankfurt and your dates, and click Search: it will list about 30 Michelin recommended accommodations complete with websites, rates, a map showing locations, and more.
www.hotelcompany.com looks like it is a good site with a wide range of hotels that cover whatever you want in a hotel. It also lists the districts where they are and maps which is handy. If you find a hotel that you like and are still not sure, write me and I can go look at it. I am fairly familiar with quite a few of them or at least their locations. I will be happy to help.
When using FRA, I usualy stay in Mainz, not Frankfurt. Mainz is much smaller - good place to have a nice meal and a walk around before departing. There's a nice old town and pedestrians-only area near the cathedral with outdoor cafes and wine bars. It's about 20 minutes to FRA on a direct train line - just a few minutes longer than from Frankfurt proper.
You can get into the Mainz Ibis hotel cheaply and it's 1 block from the Mainz Römisches Theater station - the one closest to the old town, the city park and the river. I've stayed ther and had a good night's sleep. Hotel Stadt Coblenz is another budget alternative. Other hotels cluster near the main Mainz station - the Königshof and the Hammer are popular choices. The top-end Favorite Parkhotel is right in the city park and gets very good marks. Nice Biergarten too.
I often suggest Hotel Königshof in Mainz to people. A few weeks ago someone wrote to me that he had stayed there (at my suggestion), liked it, and would stay there again.
Ann, if you will have a car which you plan to return at the Frankfurt airport, I'd suggest Rudesheim on the Rhein. It's about 35 minutes by car to the airport, an easy trip. Rudesheim is a cute (RS says it is too touristy) town with fun things to do. If it appeals to you, I have a hotel suggestion for you.
