Frankfurt: 2 days

Three of us will be staying over in Frankfort for 2 nights...first visit to country. I would appreciate help with the best way of using our time. We'd like to see the city, as well as the surrounding area, but understand we'll have to be selective. We love nature...like the Rhine, and would enjoy representative towns and buildings. I appreciate any input you'd like to share.

When will you be in Frankfurt? Different things going on here at different times of the year. We have dozens of festivals, but spring, summer and early fall are when most of them occur. If you want to go to surrounding towns as well as see the Rhine, you will need to go up past Mainz. Riding the train up and down the Rhine, getting off at towns that look interesting can be fun. Many people recommend visiting the Marksburg castle in Braubach and I do too. My favorite towns to recommend are Büdingen, Idstein, and Bad Homburg. Büdingen is an original walled town filled with wonderful historic buildings, a 13 sided palace and it is located at the foot of the Vogelsburg mountains. Idstein is on the Fachwerk route and has some of the most beautiful houses I have ever seen. Including one of the most unusual churches too, the Union Church and a cool witches tower. Bad Homburg has the former summer residence of the Kaiser, a nice Old Town, and the Saalburg, a reconstructed Roman Fort. It is located in the beautiful Taunus mountains as is Idstein. All of these towns are with-in and hour or less from Frankfurt. Frankfurt itself deserves more than a day, but if that is all the time you have, I guess you may have to plan to return some day.

Karen, I assume you're referring to Frankfurt? You've already received good information from Jo, so there's not much I can add. However, one area that you might consider visiting (an easy train ride from Frankfurt) is the town of Bacharach and that part of the Rhine. It's a beautiful area, with vineyards growing on the sides of hills above the river.

If you like art, the Stadel Museum in Frankfurt is fabulous. The Schirn Kunsthalle usually has good temporary exhibits.
