France Weather

Hey Folks,
Just a friendly warning about the weather in France (and most of Europe, actually). We just came back from 3 weeks over there (Normandy, Loire, Burgundy, Provence and Paris). It was in the 50s and 60s with heavy clouds and rain most days. One of our market days in Burgundy was 35 with steady rain. Needlessly to say, this was not normal for late may, so bring a bit extra clothing for your trip. We did have a few days of sun in Provence, and 1 in Paris (we were there a week), but not much else. The outlook looked to be improving, but who knows...

The weather has been so bad here that when we finally had a nice day on a weekend this past weekend, they made it a major feature on the news! It got more coverage than the economic stuff going on or the problems in Turkey. Ski resorts in the Pyrennes have been re-opened because there's as much snow there as is typical in January. We've been calling it the eternal winter. Last Friday I accompanied my youngest daughter's class on a field trip into the forest and kids had on winter coats and ski caps. It's been sunny and nice for almost 3 days, but sadly, it's not supposed to stay this way. Maybe July...

Hi Dina,
Just before we left, a poster inquired if shorts and jeans were appropriate attire in France. You laughed off the shorts inquiry, mentioning that you still are wearing your winter coat. Having read that, I decided to throw in a bit heavier pair of pants and a light jacket into my carry-on. Wow! I'm glad that I did that, as almost every photo has me wearing that light jacket! We still had a great trip, but it was surprising to see down parkas in Paris in June!

We just got back from three weeks and it was miserable. On top of the rain it was crazy windy. Most days around 20mph.

I was just watching Météo à la carte on France 3 television. More rain coming at the weekend and next week doesn't look too promising, except in the south east. The Criterium du Dauphine was on immediately after that, with a mountain top finish at Valmorel in Savoie, where there is lovely sunshine and temperatures in the mid 20s (70s Fahrenheit). Wish I was there today.

Yeah, the wind was the worst. Just when I would come to grips with the cold temps and rain, the wind would howl in and undercut the umbrella. It made it tough to weatherproof the strollers, too...
