France, Switzerland for two weeks

I am not sure which airport to fly into from New York. We want to visit the Berner Oberland area, including Lauterbrunnen, Interlaken Bern, Murren in Switzerland and finish up our trip in the Alsace vineyard area of France west of the Rhine. I have not formulated an exact itinerary as yet, but would Strasbourg be the airport to focus on. We plan to rent a car for the second half of the trip.

Maxine, It's not likely you'll find many international flights into Strasbourg. You'd have to get a connecting flight from a larger "hub" airport. Which region would you prefer to start in. I'd probably start in the Berner Oberland, as it would be a great area to get over jet lag! You could fly into Zurich to begin with, travel by train in the Berner Oberland and then train to Strasbourg (I'd recommend staying in Colmar, as it's much smaller and a very beautiful city). At the end of your visit, travel by train to Paris and fly home from CDG. Happy travels!

There's a morning TGV from Strasbourg that goes direct to Charles deGaulle, bypassing Paris. It takes about 2-1/2 hours. There are many trains from Strasbourg to the Frankfurt airport that take about the same amount of time. There are 1 or 2 transfers enroute.

Besides Frankfurt (better than Paris personally) Another option is Stuttgart. There are non-stops from STR to Newark. Strasbourg to Stuttgart is about an hour by train, driving can be close to 2hrs. Zurich or Geneva are your best bets for a flight in to Switzerland.

In addition to Stuttgart (which I just learned about here), nonstops from JFK or Newark go to Geneva, Zurich, Frankfurt, and Paris daily. I believe they also go to Lyon a few times a week (I know you didn't indicate an interest in going here, but it's a great city while you're "in the neighborhood"). If you're willing to make one change, you can fly into Bern, Strasbourg, and lots of other places. When looking at the airline's website directly, look into taking a bus or train from the "nonstop airport" directly to your desired city, on your airline ticket. For instance, I flew Lufthansa to Frankfurt, then took a Lufthansa bus from the airport to Strasbourg. This was all on one ticket, so not only was the price almost the same as flying to Frankfurt alone, but if I had missed my bus because my plane was late, they would put me on the next one with no penalty. Air France does similar things with trains out of CDG. Some codes to try (be aware they don't always work with sites like Kayak or Expedia, but often only on the airlines' own websites): Strasbourg train station: XWG Strasbourg bus station (next to the train station): XER
Lyon Part-Dieu train station: XYD

Thank you all so much for your help. I'm definitely going to look into the bus aspect. That might open up more avenues for me to get a nonstop flight that's not too exorbitant.
I don't remember seeing that on the Air France website. I will check again and also Suissair. FYI - I was planning to visit Switzerland first and then training over to one of the towns on the Alsace vineyard route such as Colmar or Riquewihr, traveling north, possibly staying in another town further north, ending up in Strasbourg and then flying back to New York. If I can bypass Paris, that would be preferrable. Your help is invaluable. Thanks again. Maxine

If the pricing is good, I would definitely use Stuttgart as your airport for leaving Alscace. It's the closest major airport that has direct flights to the US, and it's a small airport, very easy to get in and out of. The TGV from Strasbourg takes 90 minutes to get to the Stuttgart main train station, where you can pick up a train that goes directly to the airport in about 25 minutes or so. However, it's likely to be more expensive than Frankfurt, which would also be a solid option.
