FRANCE Oct 09: 1st week = Paris; 2nd week = France....where?

I'm headed over the first 2 weeks of October (09), spending the first week in Paris with my Australian friend who's a high school French teacher (yay!), we met 15 years ago in Monte Carlo (youth hostel) backpacking around Europe. This is my first time seeing Paris. I think we're good on Paris planning. Two single girls (42y.o. and 34y.o)hitting France again!

It's the 2nd week we don't know what to do as there's so much to see and not enough time, she has an extra week to bum around, but I have only one week and need to fly back home out of Paris. The places we've been too are: Chamonix, Dijon, Lyon, French Riviera, she's also been to Marseilles.

Museums are not a necessity, love architecture, castles, countryside...where to go? And do we do this by car or train? We're on a bit of a budget too.

Thanks for your help and advice!

Considering where you've previously been, you can consider at least three areas of France for your 2nd week:Provenceeastern France including Reims, Strasbourg and the Alsace regionLoire Chateaux country

To Kent's list I would add, maybe, the Perigord, which includes the Dordogne and Lot valleys.

You'd want a car, and it's distance from Paris means it it likely not the least expensive choice in terms of time and money. But it would be a great trip for the things you say you are interested in, and wheels are really required for a week seeing countryside wherever you go. Also, the cave paintings are astounding.

You could take a train to the area and pick up a car, and maybe fly home from Toulouse. Or fly into Toulouse and reverse the process.

I enjoyed the Loire region very much. I wish I had had more time there.

Are you wine drinkers? Take a look at RS's France tour that goes through the Burgundy region (Beune, Colmar). Though I have not been to that part of France, when we do go back - I am using that tour as my blueprint.
