My husband and I will be in France in September. The current plan is to rent a car in Paris and spend six days in Normandy returning to Paris by way of Mont St. Michel and Chartres. Then we would take a train to Avignon and spend 5 days in Provence with a car. Finally we would return to Paris by train and spend 5 days there. Does this sound practical? Any recommendations as to must see sights or villages?
I think it is an admirable plan. I notice that it does not include the Loire, however, your title nothwithstanding. It's possible your plan can be improved logistically, as you seem to be in Paris three times. Can you fly home from Marseilles? Would it make sense to take a train to Bayeux at the start of this trip and rent a car there? You may find that a French second-class rail-drive saverpass is a good option for the trip you have outlined.
Thank you for the train suggestion. Do you know if it costs extra if the car rental pick-up and drop off places are not the same?
Jan, in my experience there are no in-country drop-off fees, but things can change and you should ask your rental agent to be sure.
Hi Jan,
No matter where you go in Provence, be sure to attend at least one market day. Every town has a market day, and they are amazing. Carpentras' market is enormous and we spent a full day there. The towns of Roussillon & St. Remy de Provence on the northern end of Provence and Cassis on the Mediterranean are all worth a visit. Heidi
Thank you for the car rental information. Also, we will make sure to take in a market day in Provence.
