France itinerary for 10-12 days

We are flying into Paris (have been there a couple of times) and want to see some charmimg French countryside. My husband's family comes from the Alsace region so, we will start there but, then want to go south to Dordogne, Provence, and/or the Lot River Valley. Any suggestions on lenght of stay, where to stay, etc.? We will be renting a car. Thaks for any helpful commens!

Peg: You really should go out and buy Rick's France 2011 guide, which is available now. Then, after reading it, if you still have questions, and you will, this helpline is a great place to get them answered. Since you already know that you have 12 days, and will be arriving in Paris, renting a cat, driving to Alsace, then Provence, then the Dordogne, your itinerary gives you about 4 days in each region, including travel days. I would suggest flying "open jaw" into Paris CDG and back home out of Toulouse (TLS), which is near the Dordogne, and will save backtracking to Paris.

Thank you for your suggestions. I have read the RS France 2010 twice!! Just having trouble making final decisions because of course, I want to see it all. I like the idea of flying out of an airport in the south but am traveling with sky miles and the flights are limited.
Also, Rick didn't list many B&B's in these areas so, am hoping seasoned travelers to southern France and Alsace will have some recommendations. Thanks again for any/all suggestions! Peg

Two recommended B&B's - L Eveche, Vaison La Romaine in the old city..fantastic.
Stonehouse B&B in Caux, near Penzas, hour or so from Marseille...best I have ever stayed in!!! Near the coast, oyster farms, good food...

My favorite Alsace wine route town is Riquewihr. Any of the hotels in the little towns along the route are good. Ribeauville is also cute and of course Strasbourg has lots of great sights and stores. On your way south out of Alsace, If you're looking for an authentic castle to stay in, look up www.chateauderosieres.com Out in the countryside, a real castle loving restored, awesomely unique experience.
