france & italy in july

i will be taking my 2 teenage boys to france and italy in early july (21 days max). we will fly into paris. stay 4-5 days. then i want to make our way to italy. i am having troubles finding actual train schedules and prices. not sure whether to get a 'pass' or just pay by the ticket, but i can't make a decision if i don't know what each ticket would actually cost if bought on it's own (versus a pass). we would like to see rome, florence, pisa. any help in organizing or planning or whatever would be greatly appreciated. overwhelmed with the possibilities.

The summer train probably are not set. I think it is customary for schedules to be posted about 90 days out. If you want a feel for prices, just use a date within the next 90 days. Prices change little from spring to summer. To make a pass work these days, you generally need a lot of train travel especially in Italy where the trains are relatively cheap.

The railpass portion of this site (tab on top) should help you with this.

I don't know if you have your flight tickets yet, but being in Paris for Bastille Day on 14 July would be a wonderful treat. The French really know how to put on a show. Fireworks from the Eiffel tower, music to go along with it all, laser light show and on and on. We tell all our friends to go to Paris for Bastille day so they can see this great party.
