France activities

My husband and I have made our reservations, mostly at chambres d'hotes in the following areas: Alsace, Provence, Dordogne and Paris. We'll be there in two weeks! Any suggestions for things to do? We are not big on museums but, do enjoy people watching, hiking, canoeing and markets. Also, any ideas about what to wear/not to wear? Thanks for your insight!

I'm not trying to be funny, but do people watching, hiking, canoes and markets. Those are great activities for France! You are covering a tremendous amount of territory, though. Are you comfortable with the travel times? Also, apart from Paris, the areas you're visiting require a rental car. So I hope you have one. As far as what to wear, dress more warmly than you would for a New Orleans spring but don't worry about special clothing. Come as you are!

Yes! I have the 2010 book and the 2011 on Kindle as well as the Provence and Paris books! All quite helpful as always. I was just seeking out addtional travelers experiences. Thanks!

We do have a car. After taking TGV to Strasbourg from Paris, we'll rent one there. We did a similar trip to Italy a few years ago and were quite pleased with the itinerary. I know it's a lot to do in a short period but, we're ready! Obviously, we'd love to have more time in each area but, not possible this trip. Thanks for the tips!

Here are a few museum-free ideas: In Paris: Notre Dame, Ste-Chappelle, boat ride on the Seine (Batobus day pass is great combination of river cruising and on-off transit, but no narration), walks in many neighborhoods punctuated by sidewalk cafes whenever you need a rest or bathroom break. Easy views from Tour Montparnasse or lower level of Eiffel Tower. Parks: Tuileries, Luxembourg Gardens, Place des Vosges. Pere Lachaise or Montparnasse Cemetery. Check out the exteriors of the Louvre, Musee d'Orsay, Pompidou Center if you can stand to be that close to them ;) In Dordogne: A cave (Lascaux II, Font-de-Gaume, Peche-Merle), a castle (Castelnaud, Beynac), Sarlat market (twice a week), canoeing on the river. Have a great time!

It is a lot of fun to visit the rural markets. See what special local foods you can find. great for a picnic lunch, expecially with a bottle of the local wine
