My husband and I will be landing in Frankfurt about noon and will need to get to Mainz where our hotel is. Should we be thinking bus or train? Should we purchase now to avoid not being able to get a ride or will they be plentiful and able to be purchased easily in the airport? If I should purchase now, what site should I use? Thanks in advance for any help! Amy
There is an S-Bahn from the Regionalbahhnof, under the building across the street from Terminal 1 at FRA. It makes several stops in Mainz, including Mainz Hbf. If you tell us the hotel, we might be able to tell you which S-Bahn stop you should use. You can get to the Regionalbahnhof by going down stairs (or escalators) just inside the streetside wall of Terminal 1. There are no reservations on the S-Bahn and there is one every half hour, so none are really needed. Buy your tickets at the train station; they never sell out.
Wonderful information Lee - thank you! As a side note... I wish I was in Colorado. I hope to live there again someday!
Lee, I'm sorry I missed the part about our hotel. We are staying at the Hilton Mainz, the one on the river...
According to the Bahn website, it's a 19 min walk from the Mainz-Kastel station to the Hilton, or there is a bus. Maybe you should find a taxi. But why are you staying at the Hilton? Stay here. It's closer, a short walk across the Bahnhofsplatz from the Hauptbahnhof in Mainz.
The train you want will leave from track 3 at the Regional train station. You can find times at this website, though the trains run pretty regularly. Not sure when you are coming here, but they are doing some construction in Mainz and not all of the trains are going to each stop. You will want to get off of the train at Mainz Römisches Theater. If you Google your hotel, it will show you the S-bahn location and the hotel location. www.rmv.de and switch it to English. I am sorry Lee, but how can you compare staying on the Rhine with a scenic view, in a beautiful 5 star hotel like the Hilton, with staying in a hotel next to the bahnhof, surrounded by spielsalons and other tacky businesses? Seriously. If they had asked for a place where they could save some money, or be close to the train station, I can understand, but otherwise, no.
When are you going? Until the end of August, there is only one S-Bahn per hour from Ffm airport to Mainz Römisches Theater Bhf. It leaves the Regionalbhf at 59 min past the hour. Another S-Bahn leaves at 29 past the hour, but doesn't go to Römisches Theater. You have to change (19 min) to a regional train at Bischofsheim. Starting in September, the X:29 S-Bahn will also go to Römisches Theater. All trains going west from the Regionalbhf leave from Gleis (track) 3. There are also some regional trains that stop at Römisches Theater, but you have to know the schedule. If you are coming into FRA on Lufthansa or a Star Alliance airline, you will undoubtedly be coming into Terminal 1. There are three concourses, all lead into the Arrivals Hall of Terminal 1. The Regionalbhf is under the building across the street from Terminal 1. You get to it by going down stairs inside Terminal 1 and through a mall under the street. It's not a very long walk. Then you go down escalators to the tracks.
Convenience. The view might justify the price, but not the difficulty getting to the hotel. Königshof is a short walk across the Bahnhofsplatz from the station.
Lee, You're so funny! They 'll take a taxi and enjoy the luxury and view. Different strokes... BTW, my husband and I compared what we spent daily this summer to what you said your budget usually is. We came close, but couldn't beat your record. I hope you post what it comes to now that you'll be traveling duo.
Our hotel is booked so that's a moot point. We'll have to deal with getting to the hotel.... I don't mind a little bit of trouble for a nicer hotel. So, does this look right? 11:50 from Frankfurt (Main) Airport - Terminal 1 Arrival Footpath 9 min., ca. 184 m 11:52 at Frankfurt (Main) Flughafen Terminal 1 - Connection 11:59 from Platform Regio 3 S 8 S-Bahn S 8 Direction Wiesbaden Hauptbahnhof
12:22 at Mainz Römisches Theater Bahnhof Platform 2 Are they saying the train is a 9 minute walk from the terminal? So we walk from the terminal to the train and then the train goes straight to Mainz or is there a 2nd train?? Will there be taxis readily available at the Römisches Theater Bahnhof? I think I'm more stressed about this part of the trip than any other because it will be after a long 12 hour red-eye from the states. I want to know exactly what we're doing before we leave to avoid the dead tired stress.
"When are you going?" We'll arrive September 26th. So, this should work... "Starting in September, the X:29 S-Bahn will also go to Römisches Theater. All trains going west from the Regionalbhf leave from Gleis (track) 3." "If you are coming into FRA on Lufthansa or a Star Alliance airline, you will undoubtedly be coming into Terminal 1. There are three concourses, all lead into the Arrivals Hall of Terminal 1. The Regionalbhf is under the building across the street from Terminal 1. You get to it by going down stairs inside Terminal 1 and through a mall under the street. It's not a very long walk. Then you go down escalators to the tracks." We are arriving on United - I'm pretty sure it's Star Alliance. This is very helpful and I feel better! Thanks :) Amy
This probably won't affect your trip, but just in case... the Mainz station right now has an unexpected critical staffing shortage. Many passengers have experienced significant delays and DB has temporarily reduced it's service through Mainz. I doubt this problem will last into September, however.
Yes, United uses terminal 1. You will see directional signs for the Regional train station, so just follow them.
