We arrive in FRA on Sept 17 and fly out of HHN on Sept 19.
How do I get between the 2? If I understand correctly it's not to far and generally it's by bus. I'm wondering if renting a car would be good and then we can have some extra freedom to maybe see some castles on the 18th. It's frustrating me that I don't know what the heck I'm doing. Thank you for any help.
According to ViaMichelin, it is 125km (77mi) from FRA to HHN. The bus schedules show 1h 30m travel time. If you rent a car, also according to ViaMichelin, it would take 1h 23m. So, you might save 7 min, but how long does it take in the rental car offices for pickup and return?
If you want to see castles, you could take the train down the Rhein to Koblenz, stopping at St. Goar, and up the Mosel to Bullay, dropping in on Burg Eltz on the way. From Bullay there is bus service to Hahn.
If you check the hahn airport website (hahn-airport.de) there are several bus services from Frankfurt, Mainz, Wiesbaden, Heidelberg, the Rhine river valley etc. to Hahn airport. You can also rent a car at FRA airport and drop it off at HHN at no additonal charge. Keep in mind the gallon of gas is $9 in Germany at the moment (keeps rising, just like in the US). You could also take the train from FRA airport to Bacharach, do the valley and castles by rail and by walking and then take a bus from Koblenz to Hahn airport. Also Hahn airport is only 20 minutes from Bernkastel-Kues in the romantic Mosel river valley.
