Someone posted here that you if you book early you can get from Paris to Milan for as low as 10 euros. I'm not sure if that is the case, it seems very cheap. However, I'm not familiar with air within Europe. Any recommendations on the airline or website to use to book for a mid June flight and what is the price range? How much time should I allow for a layover at Orly for my return flight Orly to Newark, NJ?
Thanks
Yes, some excellent deals can be had. You can check discount airline flights at websites like whichbudget.com and skyscanner.net. The major airlines will likely have similar fares on routes where they're competing with the discount airlines, so don't ignore them. But be VERY careful of the discount airlines' baggage charges and limitations, and their check-in policies. Wait for the final web page before paying to discover the true cost of the flight.
As for coming back to Paris, I would aim to arrive some time the day before, and stay in a hotel overnight. Since it's not an inter-line connection, you run the risk of missing your Orly-Newark flight with no chance of compensation, if your Milan-Orly flight is delayed.
Have a hunch it's probably on Ryan, which doesn't fly out of Orly or into Malpensa. I think it's on www.airberlin.com, which I do fly between those two airports, however, couldn't find a fare. They have a US 800# on their website you can check. For your return, would suggest 3-4 hours as you have to recheck your bags onto the US bound carrier.
You can fly Orly-Milan Linate for 55 Euro on easyjet....much closer to Milan than Malpensa. A bus will take you to Milan central station.
From CDG, easyjet will cost you a few Euro more, or less, depending on when you fly, to get to Malpensa. It'll cost you about 17 Euro to get from Orly to CDG, and at least 90 minutes of your time. A train ride from Malpensa only goes to the Cadorna railway station...takes about 40 minutes. A bus goes to central station.
Ryanair will cost you about 48 Euro all in to Bergamo airport, which is even farther afield. It will also take at least 3 hours to get to Beauvais, outside of Paris, and will cost about 23 Euro for the train/metro/bus ride
Better deals than these may be found on your particular travel dates. But,aftr taking into account luggage charges, check-in fees, and credit card fees, you won't find any 10 Euro fares.
Stick with Orly. And check the major airlines as well...they may offer similar fares on routes where there's discount competition...but better schedules and luggage allowances.
Thanks for the quick responses and good information. I plan to take a train from Milan north to Domadossola, so I don't need to fly into Malpensa. I was told that it was the closest airport to go north, however that is probably the case when you fly in from the US. A smaller airport might be ok, if I could get the train from there. I have a relative in Bergamo, and if I have my geography correct, it is to the north. It may be easier to avoid Malpensa since I'm not on an international flight. I wouldn't have to fly out of Orly, but I think I definitely want to return to Orly for my return flight to the US. It will be a long enough day already.
Unfortunately, Bergamo is quite a ways to the northeast of Milan, while Domodossola is to the northwest....so you'd have to come into Milan to take a train anyway.
Fying into Linate, taking a bus to central station, then a train back out to Domodossola would take you about 2 1/2 to 3 hours, depending on your timing. There's about one train an hour.
A regional train direct from Malpensa airport to Domodossola takes about 2 to 2 1/2 hours.
You can check the various train options (but not purchase tickets) at the Italian National Railway website.
