First trip to Switzerland, questions.....

  1. In Sept. I arrive 2 hours later in Zurich on Air Canada before my daughter; where would be a convenient place to meet?
  2. Many of you advised to use ATM debit cards, I will be using Capital One, will I have any problems there, since news have mentioned that some machines aren't taking cards unless there is a chip in it?
  3. If you have used Capital One, what is the maximum that one can draw out each day?
  4. What's a safe amount of CHF to bring incase the cards don't work?

Thank you!

Sammee,

I'm assuming your Capital One card is an ATM card that accesses a bank account? If so, be sure your travel funds are in a chequing account, as that's typically all you'll be able to access in Europe. It would be a really good idea to also take a "backup" ATM card, and at least one credit card.

You shouldn't have any issues with ATM withdrawals with your card, but probably won't be able to use automated ticket machines.

Regarding the daily limit, you might want to check with Capital One to confirm your daily ATM limit, and have it increased if necessary. However, one point to keep in mind is that European Banks may impose their own daily limit, which may be different from that of your Bank.

I'd suggest taking perhaps SF$100-250 for purchases during travel, until you get organized in Switzerland.

Which parts of Switzerland will you be travelling in? Note that it can be VERY expensive!

Happy travels!

Be sure to contact your credit card company and/or your bank's SECURITY DEPT. to let them know where you are going. I once tried the automated systems that they have set-up to do this, but somehow the information does not filter down to the right people in a timely fashion or not at all.

A good place to meet is at the train station section of the airport (it's a bit like a shopping mall) at the McDonalds, past immigration and baggage claim. You will not have any problems using your non-chip card at any ATM machine or any merchant. It's hard to know what the maximum withdrawal is since each ATM machine has a different limit. In my travels I usually bring along about $200USD cash in case of emergency. I don't change it to the local currency unless said emergency occurs. Happy Travels!

The problem relates to automated ticket machine, gas station, etc.. To date no reported problems with ATMs. I assume the Capital One card is a debit card. You do not want to use credit cards for cash advances -- very, very expensive.

Seems like I have my ducks in a row.
1. I have already contacted both Capital One and my bank of my days in Switzerland; going to (Bernese Oberland) to hike.
2. I do have a Capital One debit card with a PLUS on the back to draw money from my money market account, daily limit is $500.
3. I have about 300 euros left from my trip to Rome last year, so I will use those for backup.
4. I do have an extra ATM debit card.
5. Excellent place to meet at McDonalds

Thank you so much for all your help.
