First trip to Paris to celebrate 36th anniversary

This site is wonderful - My husband and I are going to Paris for five days in April. I know what is in all of the guidebooks but I'd love to hear your advice as to the best area-budget wise to stay in Paris. The restaurant suggestions have been great. This has been years in the wishing and dreaming stages and I doubt we will be able to go back. Your special and personal experiences are very much appreciated. Thanks, Kathy

Kathy,, for an April visit I would book soon, the good less expensive places often book up, April is popuar, and many of the cute little boutique type hotels many of us love have only 20-30 rooms, so fill easily. I stayed at the Hotel Eugenie and Hotel Saint Pierre( near Sorbonne) and can recommend them both as very convenient and centrally located. Rooms are not large though, but clean , with nice staff.
Easy walk to many iconic sites( less then 5 to Notre Dame, and you in less then 2 minutes out the door you will have a view of ND and assess to where to board for a Seine Cruise from Hotel Eugenie.

Hotel Muguet. 10-15 minute walk to the Eifel Tower. Safe and quiet with a good, helpful staff. You are going to get a lot of input on this one. Check Tripadvisor for reviews.

We stayed at the Hotel Duquesne Eiffel on our Heart of France tour and I loved it. http://hotel-duquesne-eiffel-paris.com/en. It's in Rue Cler neighborhood, famous only to "Stevites" but a nice neighborhood with good connections to other parts of the city. First night in Paris -- best deal in the city -- take a boat cruise on the Seine. Touristy, but great. About $10.00 or so. I hope you guys have five of the best days of your life! Great travels, Ross in Denver

We stay at l'Hotel Hameau (always) at 48 rue de Passy and adore it - but for a 36th anniversary trip, maybe a romantic place on the Ile de la Cite would be a better choice. ;-) Everyone here will have their own favorite hotel, of course. And many will pipe up that you MUST MUST MUST see/stay on rue Cler - and I disagree with them. It's very nice, but now very touristy (well, where in Paris isn't?) and not a budget locale. Romantic stuff that my husband and I have done in Paris: picnic down by the Seine, or on the Pont des Arts. Bottle of wine, wedge of cheese, baguette, a little excellent ham, and wonderful people and scenery watching. Twilight on the stops of Sacre Couer, just hangin' out. A glass of champagne at the champagne bar at Les Galleries Lafayette. Really. A department store, yes - but having champage and watching the tres chic (and not so tres chic) Parisians shop is weirdly romantic, I swear. Early evening at Trocadero, watching the Eiffel Tower light up. GREAT place to sneak a quick snog. The Place des Voges is another wonderful place to picnic, people watch, and dream away a romantic afternoon. EXPENSiVE but really swanky-luxe-romantic: a drink at the bar at the Four Seasons George V Hotel. You will have a WONDERFUL time and make gorgeous memories - have a great time!

What your idea is as far as "budget friendly" lodging is may vary greatly from what someone else's idea is. You'd get better advice if you could give a rough idea of what you would like to keep your budget at (keeping in mind the exchange rate as if you say "I don't want to spend more than 120 a night" we need to know if you are talking $120 US Dollars or 120 Euro.). Also would help to know if you are looking to stay in a hotel or if you would want to stay in an apartment and perhaps save some money by not eating out as much.
