First night in switzerland

I am arriving in Zurich in the morning and would like to stayin the Murren area. Is this too far to travel by train on the first day? Are there any B&B or small hotels that someone can suggest?

It's not too far...Zurich to Interlaken takes about 2 hours, Interlaken to Murren will take another hour.

Since you arrive in the morning, you will easily arrive in Murren by early afternoon.

No problem at all. We just made the opposite trip last week (Muerren->Zurich and the journey was very easy. Also remember that the trains run all the way to the airport which makes traveling in Switzerland even more enjoyable. There are also a few direct trains that will run from Zurich Airport to Interlaken with no changes required which is nice if you carrying luggage.

Another thing, you can ship your luggage from the Zurich Airport train station to Muerren and just pick it up when you arrive. It's not too expensive and it sure does make the journey easy.

Do I have to make a train reservation to get on the Interlaken train? Did you buy a rail pass before you arrived in Zurich.

Reservations aren't required, needed or possible on domestic trains. All you have to do is show up at the station, buy your ticket, and hop on the next train headed in your direction. Railpasses are a good idea for Switzerland; for all of your options check-out the "Railpasses" section of this website.
