Hey Everybody! My boyfriend and I will be traveling to Paris at the end of Oct. and will be arriving on a Friday at 9ish in the morning. We plan on doing most of the museums on Sat. A tour, Notre Dame, catacombs, and cemetaries on Sunday. And finally on Monday the flea markets and just sightseeing and a boat tour at night. With that, what should we plan on doing when we arrive after we check in to our hotel on friday? I know the flight and jetlag will set in but we will be in PARIS so we want to get everything in. Any suggestions? Thanks!
I'd recommend walking, one of my favorite things to do in Paris! Walk around Ile Saint Louis (the little island east of Notre Dame), Ile de la Cite (where Notre Dame is), then west along the river as far down as the Grand Paiais, cross over the river and walk back. Find a cafe, sit and people watch. Then walk through the Latin Quarter, up to the Luxembourg Gardens and all through the park. You can keep going from there, back down to the river and cross over and explore the Marais and west up to the Champs Elysee if you have the energy! Make lots of cafe stops as needed =) Paris is a great city to explore by walking!
I would go on your walking tour your first day or maybe even a bike tour. Getting out in the sun will help you stay awake a lot better than walking around in museums.
I agree with Susan and Jo, walking in the sun is a great idea. Couple that we frequent (or long) cafe stops for people watching, and you have the quintessential Paris experience. The tuileries gardens are beautiful, and a great stroll with some cafes to boot. Versailles is also a must see in my opinion, with a healthy dose of time spent in the gardens there paddleboating, strolling, biking... and cafes. The domaine de marie antoinette is one of my favorite places in Versailles, so I'd recommend that, as well. Have fun!
Stephanie Paris is so fun and glad you are planning your stay! If the weather cooperates, see if the bike tours are still operating. See RS for info. Also walking tours by pariswalks.com. Show up at the metro stop designated and pay up. No need for a reservation. Just a note that seeing most of the museums on Saturday is a little much! I am not really a museum goer and even I couldn't do that. Which ones do you want to see? If you let us know, we can help you figure out if you can really do what you have in mind. Also Sunday is very full. Although Paris is easy to navigate on the Metro, you still have to allow time to get to each of your destinations. Check out RS for info on Sunday masses at Notre Dame. Also the timing for the catacombs tours and cemetary hours. I like your Monday itinerary best. Perfect! Allows for people watching and cafe sitting. Try to fit that in on your other days as PP have suggested. Also wine tasting at O Chateau. You will love Paris!

On a practical note, if you're staying at a hotel and not an apartment, you probably can't check in until the afternoon. So you need to drop off your luggage (my hotel had a totally insecure storage room; so I didn't leave any valuables in it). Then I would get one of the free maps available in most hotels, they're very good. Pick up a couple of carnets (block of tickets for bus and metro) and find the nearest metro and bus stops. On the way back to the hotel to check in, I'd pick up some fruit and snack items and locate a restaurant or two near the hotel. Most hotels prohibit food in the rooms but a couple of bananas or whatever wont raise any eyebrows. For actual exploring, all the previous replies are spot-on. By the way, Paris is so scenic, that riding the bus instead of the metro is like a free tour.
Walk! When my husband and I had our first trip to Paris, the first thing we did was do the Rick Steves walking tour of the Marais District (Marais Walk) with a side trip to the Mariage Freres Tea Room (our fav Paris restaurant!) for tea and brunch. I think the brunch is only served on weekends, with dessert and tea other times. See www.mariagefreres.com. The oldest location is in the Marais district at Rue du bourg tibourg. Enjoy!
Fat Tire has a great day bike tour, not difficult,, ( I am middleaged non biker ) and great way to get accquainted with Paris. No need to prebook, so you can play it by ear and weather... Other then that I would walk alot. PS did you check that flea market was open on Monday?
