I'll be arriving at Tegel airport at 8.30 after a short flight from Munich. My thinking is to buy a 3 zone train pass, head from the airport and drop my bags at my hotel close to the Landsberger Allee station and then head to Sassenhausen. I believe this is a one bus and one train journey but the hotel seems quite a way from the airport and I assume that it will be rush hour so I was wondering what travelling from the airport will be like at that time and if it would be a better idea to stash my bags at either the airport or a train station and head to Sassenhausen , then return, pick up the bags and head to the hotel later in the day. Any thoughts on the 'easiest' itinerary would be appreciated. Thanks.
I assume you mean the Sachsenhausen concentration camp and not the city of Sassenhausen a few hours away from Berlin! I'm a little lazy to look up the exact train connections, but I wouldn't store your bags at the airport, even one as conveniently located at Tegel. Use an online transit planner here: http://www.bvg.de/index.php/en/index.html and see if a trip from Tegel to Sachsenhausen would end up taking you through the Berlin Main Train Station (Hauptbahnhof). I'm guessing it will - probably the TXL bus to the Hbf, then an S bahn to Sachsenhausen. So yeah, I'd do that and then retrieve your bags and hop on the U or S bahn from Hbf to get to Prenzlauerberg and check into your hotel.
Hi, The other choice for your luggage is the coin lockers at the Oranienburg (closest town to the camp) train station aside from Berlin Hbf. No coin lockers at Berlin Hbf as there are at Berlin Ostbahnhof. You check it in at the Gepäck Center. You can go from Berlin Hbf. by the S-Bahn, as suggested above, to Bahnhof Friedrichstrasse, transfer by taking the S-Bahn to Oranienburg (Endstation, terminus). The other choice is by the regional train from Hbf to Oranienburg station, then a bus.
Thanks for the info. It seems that since I'll need to get on the bus and train anyway I may as well just do the one bus plus one train ride to my hotel and get rid of the bags altogether. Since I arrive at 8.30 I figure I should be able to get to the hotel and then back out to the camp by noon and have enough time to tour the site. Thanks again.
I was in Berlin last month, arriving at Tegel at 8:10 am. I took a cab to my hotel, which was a few blocks west of the Bahnhof Zoologischer Garten. There were no traffic problems - just normal city traffic. I retrieved my luggage and was in the hotel lobby less than an hour after the plane touched down. Of course, your hotel is farther from the airport ... perhaps the staff at the hotel could tell you more about traffic if you were to contact them.
