First 2 nights: Rhine or Wurzburg and Nurnburg ?

First timer in germany. I will be landing in Frankfurt and I'm trying to schedule my first 2 nights before proceeding to Rothenburg.

I was trying to book in St. Goar, but it appears that most places are fully booked for that Sept. weekend.

Would a night each in Wurzburg and Nurnburg be a good alternative ? Or should I search in neighboring Rhine towns ?

Thank you all! After a few 'no vacancy' responses, I finally got a positive one from Hotel Hauser in St. Goar!

Yup, Mr. Jung is in Rick's video. We'll definitely stop by Bacharach on our cruise ride.

I've stayed at Hotel Hauser and believe you've made a good choice! You'll find the view of the river from your balcony to be very nice, and the rooms are quite large (and clean). The downstairs restaurant has a great menu selection and really great food, but Frau Velich's cakes are the highlight in my opinion. The beer's not bad either. There's outside seating...watch the boats go by while drinking your favorite Hefeweizen! I'm getting thirsty just thinking about it.

Keep it simple initially, probably one destinatin for two nights. Give yourself time to recover from jetlag before you start adding new destinations.

Just arrived back from Germany for the first time. It was a great trip and Germany exceeded my expectations. We stayed in Cologne for a couple nights. About where to stay..We had a room at the Cologne Marriott very reasonable and great rooms and you can walk from the train station. Cologne is about an hour train ride from Frankfurt. Nice town, good local food and right next to the Rhine River. You must go see the Cologne Cathedral..Hard to explain but it is amazing. Bonn is very close to Cologne and is also a very nice little town to visit. We did the castles but they are full day adventures. Not sure if you would have time. Enjoy

I would try a couple of other places on the Rhein, if that is where you really want to go. There are several places in Bacharach. I would try Im Malerwinkel. Rick's books suggest some others.

You might try a place in Braubach, especially if you plan to see the Marksburg. I like Weinhaus Wieghardt.

Boppard (www.boppard.de) is lovely, with some major hotels lined up along a riverfront walk. One of them, the Bellevue, is a Best Western. You could book on their site.

As for Würzburg, I spent two nights there in Oct 07. I stayed at Pension Spehnkuch, which is listed in Rick's guidebooks. It's very inexpensive and only a block from the Bahnhof. It does have the bathroom down the hall, but I never had a problem with that. There is a streetcar from the Bahnhof to Marienberg, the fortress on the hill across the river. I really enjoyed Marienberg. From there you can take a bus to the Residenz; I didn't like it as much - too ornate. I walked back to Spehnkuch from the Residenz.

I spent part of a day (mid-morning to mid-afternnon) in Nürnberg, and felt I had seen everything I wanted to see.

I would second the vote for Bacharach. It was probably my husband and my favorite town in Germany. So beautiful and quiet, like you stepped into a fairy tale. I don't know if he does private tours, but you should look up Herr Jung. I think he's in Rick's book. He's wonderful, wonderful, wonderful!!! All that being said, Wurzburg was our last stop on our vacation (between Rothenburg and the plane trip in Frankfurt) and it was very convenient and a lovely stop over. Good luck, it sounds like you're going to have a wonderful trip!

Getting anxious about Hauser reservation. I was reserving for Sept. She finally confirmed, and said, "see you in August" :-(

If your hotel in St. Goar doesn't work out try the Pension Dettmar in Bacharach. I stayed there two years ago. It is family run,has small rooms but is clean and inexpensive. It is not in Ricks guide book. The web site is pension-dettmar.bacharach-rhein.de

In addition to the e-mail confirming the details of your stay, you may wish to place a phone call to double up. I always do both and will send another e-mail just prior to my trip as a final confirmation. Good luck...I think you'll enjoy the hotel once you're comfortable that everyone's on the same page with the dates.
