Hi, I am thinking about travelling to either Marrakech or Fez after Christmas and am wondering which is preferable for interest, history and for over all enjoyment with 2 teenagers. Thanks!
I was in both this summer I loved Fez. The market was amazing, I could have walked around for a few days and I am not a shopper. My whole group including some teenagers were glad we only had a day in Marakech. But keep in mind we had toured Morocco for two weeks. What about Essouria (I am sure I spelled it wrong) We had two days and loved it but it may be cold in winter it is right on the ocean. Wendy
Christine, if this is your first time in Morocco, I would choose Marrakech for a few reasons. First, it is slightly more south, so it should be warmer. Second, for a tourist it is a simpler city to navigate. Third, the Djemma El Fna is magic and intoxicating! Finally, and this is purely my opinion, I just enjoyed Marrakech more than Fez. I liked the African feel that it had, the views of the High Atlas mountains. Also, there are some nice day trips from the city too- just consult a guidebook for those.
Having been to both, I preferred Fez as I found it less touristy than Marrakech. I also liked the souks in Fez better too. But, I agree with the previous poster that if you only have a limited time, perhaps Marrakech is the way to go. Warning...you'll want to go back to Morocco!
I've always liked Fez best by far.
I've been to both and prefer Marrakech...much more lively!!! (Okay , so my travelling companion at the time had a bit of a tummy problem in Fez, but that wasn't the city's fault...)
Liked them both, but for a first time visit, I would say Marrakech, and since it's a lot smaller than Fez, it's easy to get around on your own.
